Chapter 25: Math Lessons and Unexpected Feelings
Xiang Yang found his homework notebook, and after flipping through it, she discovered that the handwriting for recording the homework wasn't even his.
This guy is so lazy! He even needs help to record his homework!
Looking at the homework for each subject, Xiang Yang chose to start with the arts subjects, which she was more comfortable with. After finishing her Chinese and English homework, Fu Guanxian suddenly went upstairs.
He didn't knock, but at least he said something before entering the room, “Hey, you can come downstairs to eat now!”
Hearing this, Xiang Yang sighed silently in her heart. He really was prepared to stay at her house tonight. She turned around and said to him, “I only finished my Chinese and English homework.”
“Then finish it after dinner!”
Xiang Yang looked at him resentfully. Why did she have to do his homework?
While eating dinner, Xiang Yang watched him chat with her parents, happily talking about this and that. She was unhappy. He was so shameless! He made her do his homework, then he stayed here to mooch food and drinks. Most importantly, after dinner, she had to continue doing his homework.
Xiang Yang returned to her room, and Fu Guanxian followed behind her.
“What are you following me for?”
“I'm going into the room.”
“Why don't you go downstairs and continue chatting with my parents?”
“What would I be, a third wheel for your parents? You hurry up and write! Don't change the subject here!”
Xiang Yang glared at him angrily, while Fu Guanxian, acting like he was at home, flipped through the books on her small bookshelf.
Luckily, the amount of homework for politics and history was not much. Xiang Yang finished it in a few minutes, but the remaining subjects were difficult, like math.
Xiang Yang hadn't flipped through the high school elective math textbook, she flipped to the page Fu Guanxian needed to complete, and then she opened the book and looked at the example problems for a long time.
Fu Guanxian looked at the book for a while, then looked up at her, and looked at her again. He found that she was still biting the tip of her pen and looking at the math textbook, and it seemed like she hadn't flipped a single page. Fu Guanxian's temper flared up, he couldn't take it anymore!
He tossed the book aside, ran over to her, pulled up a chair and sat down, hurriedly saying: “You're so stupid! What part don't you understand?” He moved the math textbook to the middle, picked up a pen, ready to explain and annotate while he did.
“Here.” Xiang Yang pointed to one step in the example problem, “Why is it calculated like this? How did it come about?”
“It's so simple here, you don't understand? Look, this number...”
As a result, after explaining the math problem, it was already past midnight.
Jiang Manxin came up once during this time. Seeing Fu Guanxian explaining a problem and Xiang Yang listening intently, she didn't interrupt.
Xiang Yang's comprehension ability was pretty good, and Fu Guanxian's explanation was clear and concise. He was able to simplify difficult concepts, explaining more vividly and simply than the teacher, making it easy to understand. Xiang Yang immediately understood after listening.
As a result of their efforts, when Xiang Yang finally came to her senses, she realized that Fu Guanxian had explained many example problems to her, but she hadn't filled in a single question in the practice book.
Fu Guanxian closed the textbook and asked her, “Do you understand now?”
Xiang Yang nodded.
Fu Guanxian then stood up and gathered his schoolbag, tossing books into it as he muttered to himself, “No wonder people are stealing my lunch.”
Xiang Yang understood. He was saying that he wasn't as good as Xing Zhaoyan. But high school math, chemistry, and physics, although she was able to pass them, she always had to spend a lot of time digesting them after class before she could fully grasp the concepts and solve problems.
She wasn't Fu Guanxian, who could learn everything effortlessly.
After Fu Guanxian left, Xiang Yang realized that she still had a lot of his homework left to do! Thinking about how she had to do her own homework tomorrow, what would she do if he came to her house to do his homework again?
Fortunately, much to her relief, Fu Guanxian didn't appear for a whole day.
On Monday, while in class, Xiang Yang yawned repeatedly. She thought her spirit was so bad because she had been worried about Fu Guanxian coming to her house all day yesterday. It turned out she had been torturing herself.
As they walked to the teacher's office together, Xing Zhaoyan asked, “Why do you look so sleepy?”
“I didn't sleep well last night.”
“Remember to drink a glass of milk before bed, it's good for sleep.”
“Thank you, I know.”
Xing Zhaoyan continued, “How about we go for a run together later? Get some exercise. I think you look quite frail, it's good to exercise more, and besides, we have the school sports meet after the midterms. You're a class officer, you can't not participate.”
Xiang Yang almost forgot about this. But she still refused, “No need to bother, I'm fine on my own.”
Fu Guanxian leaned against the oval-shaped corridor railing, looking down at the opposite building. He happened to see two people walking side-by-side on the corridor of a certain floor. Even from a distance, just by looking at them from afar, he knew that the girl was Xiang Yang.
Zheng Jie and the guys behind him played a game together, and when they looked up again, they found that Fu Guanxian was gone from the classroom.
He searched for a while before he found him standing in the middle of the east corridor, looking at the west teaching building.
That was the freshman's territory, what was he looking at?
Seeing that many girls had already stopped on the corridor and by the windows to secretly look at him, Zheng Jie hurried over and asked, “What are you looking at so intently?”
Fu Guanxian withdrew his gaze, “Nothing, I suddenly remembered, you said who the freshman year top student was last time?”
“His name is Xing something, a boy. He's handsome... Don't worry, he's not as handsome as you.”
Fu Guanxian rolled his eyes at him, “Are you talking nonsense?”
Zheng Jie was confused, “Then what were you asking?”
“Do you know anything about this Xing Zhaoyan?” Fu Guanxian asked.
“That top student?” Zheng Jie confirmed.
Fu Guanxian was speechless, “Can you use your brain to have a proper conversation? We're not talking about him now, who are we talking about?”
“No no no! I can't remember names, I'm just confirming. But I don't know much, why don't I help you investigate?”
Fu Guanxian glanced at him, “Can you even find out anything?”
“Haha, you don't understand. Having lots of friends makes things easy. Especially for guys like you who have the top student halo, a lot of people like to gossip about you!”
So, two days later, Zheng Jie reported back to him, “I heard he's not from this city. He's from a remote mountain village. He got into Qinglin High School because he did so well in junior high. The boys in his class said he's pretty well-liked, he often helps his classmates, and he has a lot of influence. The girls in his class all look up to him. But...”
“But what?” Fu Guanxian kicked him, “Can you speak without stopping halfway?”
“Fu Guanxian, what are you doing, that hurts!”
“Hurry up and say it, don't talk nonsense!”
Zheng Jie bent down slightly and rubbed his calf, replying, “Someone said he likes the school flower.”
“Heh.” Fu Guanxian snorted twice. “The masses are indeed discerning!”
That night, Fu Guanxian went to Xiang Yang's house uninvited again. Xiang Yang was writing homework in her room, and he looked around curiously.
Xiang Yang was brainstorming for her essay, but her attention kept drifting to “what was he doing behind me again,” and after half an hour, she had only written the beginning.
Xiang Yang was in a hurry, but she didn't dare to rush him, and she didn't dare to drive him away.
She thought for a moment and asked him with her pen, “You want me to do your homework for you?”
Fu Guanxian looked at her, understanding the implication of her words, and said, “You do yours, I'll read mine. No interference.”
It was clear that he was already interfering.
Just as Xiang Yang was thinking about how to politely get him to leave, she saw his flipping through the textbook stop, then his eyes narrowed slightly. He pointed to a few lines in the math textbook, “Whose handwriting is this?”
Xing Zhaoyan's.
Xiang Yang was startled, and she didn't dare to say anything.
During the afternoon practice session yesterday, she had been thinking about a math problem, and it took her a while to figure it out. Finally, Xing Zhaoyan flipped through her math book, compared the example problem with the problem she was stuck on, and explained the logic to her. During this time, he habitually wrote a few lines on her textbook as he explained and wrote.
However, Xing Zhaoyan's handwriting was also very beautiful, casual yet with a sense of maturity and stability.
Although Xiang Yang was a little uncomfortable seeing someone else's handwriting in her textbook, she didn't really care.
She just hadn't expected Fu Guanxian to see it.
Seeing that she didn't say anything, Fu Guanxian continued, “I know it's Xing Zhaoyan's, even if you don't say it.”
Her math teacher was a female teacher. This handwriting clearly wasn't hers.
Seeing her not refute him, the smile on Fu Guanxian's face grew colder. “Looks like you're quite close! I can even see his writing in your book.”
“I just didn't understand that day, he was kind enough to help me figure it out.” There was nothing wrong with that, was there?
But in Fu Guanxian's eyes, it was a serious matter.
His face turned cold, and his eyes glared at her. “Xiang Yang, did you take what I said last time as empty words? I told you to keep your distance from him, and you're getting closer and closer to him! Xiang Xiaoyang, if you dare to fall in love in high school, I will definitely tell your parents!”
Hearing this, Xiang Yang felt very uncomfortable and retorted, “Don't assume everyone is in love just because you are. Fu Guanxian, you can be really unreasonable sometimes.”
Fu Guanxian glared at her fiercely, coldly laughing, “Hmph, so you have a new backer, now you even have the confidence to talk back! I'm unreasonable? You're right?”
Xiang Yang didn't argue with him. She turned her back and continued looking at her essay, which she had only started.
Fu Guanxian, seeing her like this, felt the flames in his heart burn even hotter. He stormed out the door, slamming it shut with a bang that startled Xiang Yang.
Xiang Yang couldn't understand at all. What was with his unpredictable mood swings?
