Chapter 91: Buying Vegetables
Ying Sisi said frankly, “…The vegetables are ours. You are using eggs to trade. How did they become yours?” Are you trying to bully me?
“The vegetables are mine, and the eggs are mine too.”
“Since you insist on saying so, then please leave.”
Auntie Cheng saw that Sisi wasn't giving in and laughed. “I was just kidding. I'll go home and get some eggs.”
Ying Sisi said, “Okay. I'll also call Old Liu at the end of the street to be a witness. We don't want people who don't know what's going on to see you taking eggs to trade for cabbage and think that we're running an illegal business.”
Auntie Cheng's expression froze. “Trading vegetables, you don't have to be so serious, do you?”
“It's good for everyone to have a witness.”
“Okay.” Auntie Cheng left.
Ying Sisi watched her go, then turned and went back into the house. She met Li Junlu's eyes.
What are you looking at?
Li Junlu lowered his eyelids. “Let her trade eggs for vegetables. Everyone on the street will hear about it tomorrow.”
“You have been neighbors for over ten years. Don't you know what she is like? She can only take advantage. No one else can take advantage of her. She is willing to trade her eggs for overpriced cabbage. If she was willing to agree, she wouldn't have wasted my time.”
Li Junlu nodded slightly. “You're very clever. You're like your mom.”
Ying Sisi snorted. “Yeah, she is so clever that she got abandoned by her husband and still insisted on having a child. She is so clever that she didn't care that her parents were old and still left her child with them to raise. You must be very proud. You have a woman who, despite gossip and her own life, insists on continuing your bloodline.”
Li Junlu: "…" Is she trying to get under my skin?!
Ying Sisi finished scolding Li Junlu and left.
She wandered aimlessly along the street. She heard many people complaining about the vegetable prices in the past two days.
Some people who had relatives in the countryside even planned to bring rice, flour, and oil from their homes to trade.
After some thought, she came to the black market closest to her home.
As she expected.
The market was bustling.
It was full of vegetable vendors.
The vegetable prices were much cheaper than in the vegetable market. Everyone who went in left with a basket full of vegetables.
There was also a pork stall.
The price was three cents higher than in the market, but the meat was good.
Ying Sisi spent two yuan to buy two pounds of pork belly. She continued to walk forward, and when she reached the end, she turned around and stopped at a stall selling shepherd's purse. In her memory, this vegetable was only available in the spring.
But there was some available in this cold weather.
“Miss, would you like some? Pork belly is perfect for making dumplings with shepherd's purse. It's twelve cents a pound. It's just dug from the snow. It's rare.”
“You can use scallions or cabbage to make dumplings. They taste much better than shepherd's purse.” Sisi said.
This stuff is everywhere. It's all over the roadside dirt mounds and in the fields. Who would eat it?
She even used it to feed her pigs.
But here in the city, it's sold for twelve cents.
How is everything good in the city?
“Ten cents, ten cents.” The vendor was eager to do business. He lowered the price and complained. “I've been here since noon. I've been blowing cold wind for three hours and I still haven't sold any. My family relies on me to use this to earn some money to improve our lives. Miss, you look like a lucky person. How about you give me a good start?”
Ying Sisi suddenly felt sympathy. “I can buy it, but I'm afraid people back home will laugh at me for being stupid if I spend ten cents on shepherd's purse. If you sell it for five cents, I'll take it all.” The color of the shepherd's purse was a bit dark, but it felt tender when she pinched it.
It shouldn't taste bad.
There was so much of it. I definitely can't eat it all by myself.
I'll go to the restaurant and see if Old Zhao wants some.
If Old Zhao wants it, I'll just keep two pounds.
