Chapter 129: Innocent
Ying Sisi laughed. “Okay.” She spent some time finishing the scarf and put it around his neck. “This black color makes your skin look whiter. Hey, you seem to have gotten a bit paler.” He had a dark tan when he came back.
Qin Yanci said, “The wind and sun in the farm. You can't get pale no matter what.”
“You worked hard.” Ying Sisi felt sorry for him. She cupped his face and kissed him.
Qin Yanci's eyes suddenly became deep. He picked her up and held her. “You initiated that.”
Ying Sisi buried her face in his chest. She shyly hummed in agreement.
For the next few days, Ying Sisi stayed at home. She bought groceries and cooked every day. Her life was peaceful and comfortable.
Except that her wallet was getting lighter too quickly.
She had been married for two weeks, and she had spent 20 yuan.
Fortunately, her in-laws would send some supplies every now and then. Otherwise, she wouldn't even have 30 yuan.
This can't go on.
The weekend arrived. She couldn't hold back her entrepreneurial heart. She contacted Lao Zhao.
When Lao Zhao saw her, he thanked her profusely. “Girl, I have to thank you. It's all thanks to your reminder. Several people on our street, those who bought goods from the restaurant, and the people who sold the goods, were arrested.”
Ying Sisi was terrified. She was fortunate that she went to her in-laws to send them peaches that day. Otherwise, she would have missed her father-in-law's news.
They must be in jail now.
She said, “Is the situation calm now? Can we buy and sell things again?”
“I don't dare to collect them lately. Although I really want your things.” Lao Zhao said, “Come back and ask in ten days or half a month.”
Ying Sisi smiled. “Alright.” She took a bus to the outskirts of the city and quietly entered the forest.
There were several rotten peaches scattered on the ground. Two were left on the tree.
One was rotten.
She picked the good one. When she pressed it, it indented.
It was ripe.
She tore a small opening and sucked the juice. After she finished, she walked around. The snow outside had melted. The forest was even more humid. It didn't take long for her body to become damp.
She was freezing. She picked a handful of wild garlic and left the forest. As she walked along the riverbank, she ran into the old man she met the first time she came here. He was carrying a wild chicken. He recognized Ying Sisi immediately. He said, “You're not the wife from Liao Village. Why are you lying to me? What are you doing in the forest? What's in your bag?”
Ying Sisi sensed that he was angry. She didn't dare to hide it. “I'm poor. I came to catch wild chicken to have a treat. I didn't catch anything. I picked some wild garlic. I almost got stuck in the mud.” She opened her bag and showed her muddy shoes.
The old man saw that it was true. But he had been fooled once. He didn't believe her. “You look so delicate. You don't look like a girl from a poor family. Tell the truth, or I'll report you to the village.”
Ying Sisi's heart tightened. To make herself look innocent, she looked at him and started to cry. “It's the truth. You can follow me home. We're from out of town. We don't have a city resident registration. We can't eat rationed food. My father is sick. My stepmother ran away. I have an 80-year-old grandma and a young brother. I'm the only one who supports them. You can see from my clothes how poor we are. Wuwuwu…”
She cried. Two tears rolled down her cheeks. She pointed to the patched sleeve of her coat to make her story sound more real.
The old man's heart softened. “Sigh, it's not easy. Take my wild chicken. Go home and get some good nourishment.”
“Ah? I can't accept it. It's getting late. I have to go home. My grandma will be worried if I'm out for too long.” Ying Sisi turned and left.
After walking a short distance, she turned back.
The old man didn't follow her.
She finally relaxed and wiped away the tears that had dried on her cheeks.
I can't go back to that forest again.
As the weather warmed up, more and more people went out.
Even if I got something from the forest, it's not convenient to bring it to the city.
