Chapter 01: The Fiancé
Winter of 1977.
The train carrying the educated youth back to the city roared into Yan Jing.
Ying Sisi stood nervously at the exit, her gaze fixed on the young man not far away.
He stood in the cold wind, his thin figure stark against the chill, his stern face exuding a sense of pride and aloofness.
This was her fiancé, Qin Yanci.
Compared to the youthful and vibrant image in the photo, he now appeared mature and steady, drawing attention.
She wondered if her stepmother would regret not having her stepsister engage to him when she saw him later.
As people began to move, she stopped her wandering thoughts and called out softly, “Ah Ci, Qin Yanci?”
“Who are you?”
Qin Yanci scrutinized the girl before him.
No more than twenty, with fair skin, an oval face, and large eyes.
The clumsy floral cotton coat and pants could not conceal her delicate beauty.
Her voice was gentle and soft, sending shivers down the spine of anyone listening.
Ying Sisi looked at him, summoning her courage. “I’m your fiancée, Sisi. Didn’t Uncle and Aunt write to tell you about our engagement?”
Ying Sisi looked at him, summoning her courage. “I’m your fiancée, Sisi. Didn’t Uncle and Aunt write to tell you about our engagement?”
Qin Yanci’s demeanor was cold. “Now I know. Since you are my fiancée, go back and warm my bed.”
Ying Sisi blushed. "..." Wasn't that a bit too forward?
She considered turning away but feared she couldn't explain to her father, so she clenched her fists and said in a voice as small as a mosquito’s, “Okay, are you cold? Here, take this.”
Before coming, she had specially prepared a warm cotton coat and now offered it with both hands.
Qin Yanci paused, and for some reason, his irritation dissipated significantly due to her earnest and sincere demeanor. After a moment's hesitation, he took the coat and draped it over himself, his tone losing some of its chill. “Why didn’t my parents come personally?”
Ying Sisi felt conflicted. If she told him his sister-in-law was giving birth and the family had gone to the hospital, would he be disappointed? What if he assumed his parents favored someone else and caused trouble?
She bit her lip and shyly suggested, “You can come home with me first. We can talk about it slowly when I help you warm your bed, okay?”
A hint of surprise crossed Qin Yanci's eyes, and his cold expression showed a trace of discomfort. He changed the subject. “Is your name Si Si, meaning you are the fourth child in your family?”
“It's 'Ying Sisi', I only have one half-sister.”
Leading him home, they just entered the courtyard when they bumped into Li Yuwei.
Li Yuwei sported the trendy Ke Xiang hairstyle, dressed in a red, white, and gray plaid coat, wrapped in a white scarf and paired with brown corduroy pants and small black leather shoes. Her makeup was exquisite, exuding a fashionable aura.
Seeing the two, her brow twitched.
Three months ago, she had been reborn.
In her previous life, she had been the one engaged to Qin Yanci.
Initially, she had been very pleased with the match.
The Qin family lived in the wealthiest part of Yan Jing, in a courtyard in the East City, her parents held respectable jobs.
He had a high school education and was handsome.
Everyone envied her for marrying into a good family.
On the day Qin Yanci returned to the capital, she had dressed up carefully, waiting for him at the station for three hours in the cold wind.
It was love at first sight.
It was love at first sight.
She had thought he would also be pleased with her beauty and style, but to her surprise, he had only asked, “Why didn’t my parents come?”
She couldn’t remember how she had responded, but he had slapped her, leaving her face swollen.
She returned home alone.
When her parents learned of her experience, instead of comforting her, they blamed her for being reckless and useless.
Later, they married.
Qin Yanci’s true nature was revealed—he took pleasure in tormenting her.
Qin Yanci’s true nature was revealed—he took pleasure in tormenting her.
As for Ying Sisi, her mother had schemed to marry her off to a good-for-nothing near her grandmother’s house for a dowry.
Unexpectedly, that good-for-nothing turned out to be a dragon among men.
After the market opened up in the 1980s, he quickly became the richest man in Yan Jing due to his talent.
Ying Sisi transformed from a mountain chicken into a phoenix, surrounded by admirers and leading a glamorous life. When she told the good-for-nothing to go east, he wouldn’t go west, and even used his power to have her father removed from his position and her mother fired, leaving them poor and destitute, dying on the streets.
Now, given a second chance, she wanted to live Ying Sisi’s life and take revenge for her parents.
Convincing her father to betroth Ying Sisi to Qin Yanci, cutting off her ties to the good-for-nothing, was just the first step.
