Chapter 16: Adding Fuel to the Fire
He summoned the character panel, and the contents had indeed changed.
It's real?
Is this skill legitimate?
Chen Fan looked at the big yellow dog that was still barking. Now the dog's barking sounded different to him.
"Scram." "Scram." "Scram."
Oh, Chen Fan understood. It was telling him to go away.
He hesitated for two seconds, then tentatively barked at the dog twice, "Woof woof."
Hmm?
The big yellow dog was immediately stunned.
He said he wouldn't leave?
After realizing this, the dog got angry. Its intelligence, equivalent to a human child of six or seven years old, didn't allow for much complex thought.
I told him to leave, but he wouldn't. How can I let him get away with this?
If I let him go, will the master let me go?
It immediately lowered its body, preparing to attack.
Chen Fan saw this, and quickly barked again, "Woof woof."
The big yellow dog paused, narrowed its eyes at him, willing to leave? Hmph, scared, huh!
Chen Fan cautiously backed away, finding that the big yellow dog had actually stopped its attack posture. His eyes lit up, is this Beast Language really useful?
Just then, the door to the house opened, and Captain Yang came out. Seeing it was Chen Fan, he laughed heartily, "I wondered what wild dog it was. I didn't recognize the sound. It's you!"
Then he waved at the big yellow dog, "Go, go, go."
The big yellow dog immediately wagged its tail, rubbed against his legs twice, then wagged its tail and went into the house.
Captain Yang beckoned to Chen Fan, "Come, come, have a sit inside."
Chen Fan walked over with a smiling face, "I was just taking a walk."
Captain Yang led him into the house. Chen Fan's vision suddenly darkened, and it took him several seconds to see clearly.
The main room was not large, about twenty square meters, with four doors on both sides, which should be four rooms. Behind the main room was a passageway, a door leading to the backyard, and another small room.
Normally, that should be the granary for storing food.
There were eight people sitting around a large brazier in the main room. Besides Accountant Liu and Keeper Huang, there was a woman and five children of different ages—three girls and two boys. The oldest girl was probably fifteen or sixteen years old, and the youngest one was still wiping his nose with his sleeve.
These should be Captain Yang's family.
When they saw Chen Fan come in, the woman immediately got up to get him a chair, next to Keeper Huang.
Captain Yang beckoned, "Sit down."
Then he sat down on an empty chair on the other side.
Chen Fan politely greeted everyone, "Accountant Liu, Keeper Huang, Auntie Yang."
He also waved at the children, "Hello."
Then he took a large enamel mug from Auntie Yang.
The enamel mug originally had a white bottom and blue flowers. He didn't know how they maintained it. There was a thick layer of black and yellow grime on it. Chen Fan blew on it several times bit didn't dare to drink from it.
The brazier was not burning charcoal or wood, but a whole old tree root.
The tree root was about two feet in diameter, and you could still see the growth rings where the tree trunk was cut off. The other sides still had thick roots.
At the moment, it was placed sideways in the brazier, filling the entire brazier. A part of it also extended to rest on the fire rack. The brazier was filled with ash and some of the tree roots were slowly burning, occasionally emitting puffs of smoke that stung the eyes.
At this rate, this tree root would probably burn for many days.
But with the door closed, this small fire would be enough.
After Captain Yang and the others chatted with Chen Fan for a while, they continued their discussion about the team. Chen Fan just listened.
Keeper Huang said, "After paying the public grain this year, most of the remaining food has been distributed, leaving only 500 jin of corn and 200 jin of white rice for emergencies. The rest of the lotus root, fish, and vegetables have been handed over or sold, and the money and coupons are here."
He handed Captain Yang a thick envelope.
Accountant Liu also handed him a notebook, "This is the dividend I calculated according to everyone's work points, and distributed to each household. Take a look."
Captain Yang flipped through it, then returned it to them, "You keep them for now. Everything else has been distributed. Some people haven't dealt with their pigs yet. The ones that meet the standards are fine, but the ones that don't will probably have to be covered by the team. Also, the pigs left in the pigsty will be slaughtered and distributed in a few days. We'll calculate everything together then."
He filled his tobacco pipe and frowned, "As for next year's work arrangements, we still need to make a plan."
Accountant Liu took out a small cloth bag from his pocket, then took out a piece of paper about half the size of his palm. He took some tobacco from the bag and carefully rolled it into an irregular strip on his thigh. Then he rolled it up with paper, and finally moistened the edge of the paper with saliva, sticking the paper roll together, making a homemade cigarette.
He offered it to Chen Fan, who was engrossed in watching, "Have one?"
Chen Fan quickly shook his head and waved his hands, "Thank you, I don't know how."
Accountant Liu chuckled, "Never seen it, huh?"
Chen Fan grinned, "I'm not very knowledgeable."
Captain Yang and the others exchanged glances. They could see the smiles on each other's faces.
If this kid wasn't from a high-ranking cadre family, how could he not have even seen a hand-rolled cigarette?
We've picked up a treasure! If we find his family, how could they treat the team badly?!
Thinking of this, the three of them decided to add fuel to the fire.
Captain Yang looked at Chen Fan and said with a pleasant smile, "Little Chen, what difficulties do you have now?"
Chen Fan was a little confused. Didn't he just ask this a while ago? Why ask again?
But he still smiled and shook his head, "Thank you for your concern, Captain. I was missing two sets of clothes, but you said that Accountant Liu and Keeper Huang would help to solve that. I don't lack anything else."
"Hmm hmm."
Captain Yang nodded, then looked at him for a few more moments. He suddenly got up and went to the inner room. When he came out, he already had two pairs of cloth shoes in his hand.
Then he handed them to Chen Fan, "The shoes you're wearing are the ones an educated youth left behind when he left, they are almost worn out and don't fit well. Try these on."
Chen Fan quickly put down the enamel mug, stood up and waved his hands repeatedly, "How could I—"
Captain Yang stuffed them into his hands, "Take them, try them on. If they're too small, have your aunt make another pair for you. She can make them in a day."
Chen Fan couldn't refuse, so he sat down, took off his cotton shoes, and put on the cloth shoes. He stood up and took two steps, "They fit perfectly."
Captain Yang laughed, "Perfect, that's good."
He turned and smiled, "I was wondering if they would be too small, but he's half a head taller than me, but his feet are about the same size."
Auntie Yang didn't mind the two pairs of shoes. She smiled, "He's obviously worn shoes since he was little. You grew up barefoot, of course it's different."
She looked at Chen Fan, "It's not easy for young people to be away from home. If you have any difficulties, tell Auntie. Auntie will find a way to help you."
Chen Fan grinned, "Thank you, Auntie Yang."
Look at this, he got another two pairs of shoes.
