Chapter 14: So Foolish
After filling out the forms, the two received two copies of their marriage certificate.
Ying Sisi held the certificate, filled with trepidation about the future.
Suddenly, her hands felt empty.
Qin Yanci snatched the marriage certificate from her. “I'll keep this. You wait outside for a moment.”
Ying Sisi obediently nodded. “Okay.”
Li Yuwei’s eyes flickered as she walked over to Ying Sisi, whispering in her ear, “Sister, you need to hold onto your marriage certificate yourself. Otherwise, if you want to divorce later, it won't work. I have to remind you of something: I've heard Qin Yanci has mental issues and particularly loves getting physical with people. Now that you two are legally married, if he hits you, it will count as a domestic dispute. Outsiders can only advise, but they can’t interfere. You need to be careful; he might take out his frustrations on you.”
Ying Sisi was somewhat prepared for this.
But hearing it from Li Yuwei changed the nature of the situation.
She started to suspect that her father was also aware of this.
When she was born, her mother had a difficult labor.
Her grandparents raised her until she was fifteen, but both passed away.
Her uncle and aunt robbed her of the house they left her, planning to marry her off to an old bachelor in exchange for something.
At that moment, her father appeared.
She thought she could finally live a stable life, but who would have thought he was only interested in climbing the social ladder?
She was furious.
“If you knew, why did you wait until now to tell me? Do you really want to see me scared?”
Li Yuwei's intentions were exposed, and she was infuriated. “Sister, I was just trying to remind you. How can you twist my words? No wonder Mom says you don’t know what’s good for you; she wasn't wrong at all. Just wait to be beaten!” She turned and walked away.
Ying Sisi thought about it and concluded that the only reason her life was different this time was because her fiancé was different.
Everything she had seen so far was just his facade.
When they were alone, he would surely reveal his true self.
Angry, Ying Sisi pressed her lips together and clenched her fists.
A voice interrupted her thoughts. “Wife, did Li Yuwei upset you?”
Ying Sisi came to her senses, her face flushing. She really wasn’t used to his way of addressing her.
They hadn't even known each other for three days.
It sounded as if he had called her that for years.
She first denied it, then retorted angrily, “She said that since I got the marriage license, I should live at your house. We haven't held the wedding yet; it would sound so bad if it got out, don't you think?”
Qin Yanci was taken aback. He thought that getting the license meant they were legally married, and she could stay at his place tonight. Since she was unwilling, he figured it could wait: “Hmm. Should we take a stroll, or go home first?”
“Let's go home.” Ying Sisi was eager to see how much money was in the red envelope.
As they walked, Ying Sisi felt something was off.
“A-ci, aren't we going home first?” This path didn't seem to lead to home, nor to the courtyard.
Could Qin Yanci really be as Li Yuwei described, someone who resorts to violence, planning to take her to a secluded place to torment her? The more she thought about it, the more fearful she became, her voice trembling. “A-ci, where are you taking me?”
“You'll know when we get there.” Qin Yanci took off his scarf and wrapped it around her neck. “Put this on; your voice is getting cold.”
The scarf carried Qin Yanci's warmth.
Ying Sisi felt a warmth around her neck, and as he gently tied the scarf for her, even brushing her hair back, it comforted her anxious heart.
Once calm, she couldn't help but smile at her
own thoughts.
How foolish she was to actually believe Li Yuwei.
Qin Yanci had worked at the farm under militarized management; could someone with real mental issues endure for ten years?
