Chapter 08: The Tutor and the Tutee
For this rare seven-day holiday, Xiang Yang's plan was mostly to study, but taking on Fu Guanxian's National Day homework was completely out of her plan. Fu Guanxian seemed to be very merciful and said, “Seven days, four days should be enough for you to do your own homework!”
Xiang Yang looked at him, held back, but didn't have the courage to tell him that she didn't want to do his homework. Fu Guanxian patiently waited for her for a few dozen seconds. Finally, seeing her bright eyes darting around but not saying a word, he said, “I also think four days is a bit too long. Giving you more than half of the holiday to do homework is too much. Of course, you don't have to thank me too much.”
Xiang Yang pulled at the corner of her mouth helplessly and didn't respond.
So, Xiang Yang spent the whole day sulking, stretching out the homework that she could normally finish in two or three days to four days.
Of course, during these four days, Fu Guanxian wouldn't let her have a peaceful moment. When the adults weren't home, he would boss her around like he was the emperor, telling her to pour a glass of water, get a bottle of soda, cut some fruit, or even tell her to carry his blanket out to get some sun.
When Xiang Yang carried his blanket out of the room, she was truly annoyed. She didn't even bother to sun her own blanket, and now she had to sun his blanket!
Also, when she practiced piano in the afternoon, Fu Guanxian would always be there to give unsolicited advice, “Hey, can you even read music? You played that note wrong! Here, here, your strength is wrong!”
“Xiang Yang, didn't you practice piano since you were little? This level, screech screech, is really not up to par!”
Xiang Yang, who was sitting at the piano, suddenly stopped and looked up at him, unable to help but retort, “You're so good, why don't you try it?”
Xiang Yang thought that she would make him angry by contradicting him like this, but she unexpectedly found that Fu Guanxian's face changed slightly, and he looked like he was about to move, excited. Xiang Yang then realized that many people had said that Fu Guanxian's eyes were very attractive, and it was true. His black eyes were even brighter than the stars.
Xiang Yang quickly looked away and lowered her head to look at her hands still on the black and white keys.
“Hey, what are you still sitting there for? Didn't you say I could try it? Get up, get up!”
Xiang Yang numbly got up as she was told.
Fu Guanxian sat down, his face slightly excited, “I've been watching you play for so long, it's frustrating! Watch, I'll only demonstrate once! Other people ask me to play, and I'm not even willing to.”
Xiang Yang watched his long, slender fingers, with their distinct bones, dance gracefully on the black and white keys. When the first note came out, Xiang Yang was deeply shocked. The powerful auditory experience was completely different from what she played. Even the accompaniment seemed to have changed.
Xiang Yang looked at him, suddenly lost in thought. She only knew that he had learned piano for a while when he was younger, but she didn't know that his talent wasn't just for academics. He was also this good at music.
The song ended perfectly. Fu Guanxian stopped his smooth movements and raised his head proudly, “Now you know how bad you play!”
Xiang Yang gritted her teeth and ignored him. Humph, so what!
Seeing that she was clearly not convinced, Fu Guanxian deliberately continued, “I'll have to talk to Auntie Xiang tonight. You can't just get away with it because you're her daughter. Look at you, what have you learned?”
Xiang Yang looked up, wanting to glare at him but not daring to. So, she pushed him away, “Get up, I'm going to practice.”
Fu Guanxian rolled his eyes, wanting to scold her but holding back. He wouldn't argue with her for the sake of her being so stupid but still knowing to work hard. So, Fu Guanxian didn't bother her anymore and went back to his room to play video games.
He hadn't played for ten minutes when Lian Rui called him, inviting him to watch a movie. The latest action movie had been mentioned by Lian Rui several times.
Fu Guanxian refused, “No, no!”
“Why not?” Lian Rui replied, “Didn't you say your parents went on their honeymoon? You're so bored at home by yourself!”
Fu Guanxian looked at his room and said arrogantly, “Who told you I'm home alone?”
“Ah? You're not home? Did you go on a trip?” Lian Rui was surprised, “Wow, Fu Guanxian, are you a good friend? You go on a trip and don't even bring me along!”
“Get lost, get lost. Who said I went on a trip?”
“Then if you're not home and you didn't go on a trip, where did you go?”
“A relative or friend's house.” Fu Guanxian dodged the question, “I'm not going to watch a movie. I have things to do!”
“What are you busy with?”
Fu Guanxian said, “Doing homework. I'll talk to you later.” He hung up the phone.
Lian Rui was puzzled on the other end of the phone. He's doing homework? He's the one who has the most unfinished homework in the class! He just said he's going to do homework? Lian Rui doubted his hearing.
But Fu Guanxian really was doing homework, but it was tutoring Xiang Yang. Xiang Yang could barely manage the literature homework, but the science homework was really difficult for her. Fu Guanxian threw the textbook to her and let her study it. Xiang Yang still didn't understand.
Fu Guanxian pulled over a draft paper, waved his hand, “How can you be so stupid! This question is asking...”
Xiang Yang's attention was entirely on his draft paper. Seeing him explain while writing down the key steps in a flowing script, she had to admire him deeply.
After Fu Guanxian finished explaining, he pushed the paper towards her and asked, “Do you understand?”
Xiang Yang looked at it two or three more times, going through all the steps in her mind. Finally, she nodded, “I understand.”
Fu Guanxian handed her the pen, “You understand, so hurry up and write.”
Xiang Yang glanced at him and silently lowered her head to help him complete the practice problems.
For three whole days, the most frequent sentence Xiang Yang heard from Fu Guanxian was, “How can you be so stupid!” She had always known that she wasn't as good as him. Why did he need to remind her constantly?
On the afternoon of the seventh day, Fu Guanxian's parents came back from their romantic getaway and went to the Xiang family's house to pick him up. Kong Yiyue personally gave Xiang Yang a gift, a limited edition English original novel.
Xiang Yang was overjoyed and thanked Kong Yiyue repeatedly.
Seeing her so happy about the gift, Fu Guanxian, who didn't care about gifts, sarcastically asked, “Mom, what about my gift?”
Kong Yiyue, who was taking out the gifts for Xiang Yi and his wife from the gift bag, didn't even look at him and replied, “You don't have one.”
Fu Guanxian was very disappointed, “Mom, who's your real son?”
Kong Yiyue replied, “If it could be Xiang Yang, Mom would be even happier.”
Fu Guanxian crossed his arms, leaned back against the sofa, and said unhappily, “Mom, you're going to lose your son if you keep doing this.”
Kong Yiyue didn't bother with him and continued to chat happily with Xiang Yi and his wife.
Fu Guanxian looked at his father and said, “Dad, you don't control your own wife. She's abusing your son!”
Fu Jinting glanced at him calmly and replied, “I think your mom is doing great.”
Hearing this, Kong Yiyue smiled and turned to look at Fu Jinting, her eyes full of amusement.
Seeing that his parents didn't give him any face, Fu Guanxian looked at Xiang Yang. She was rarely smiling happily at the adults. Noticing his gaze, she was about to look away, but Fu Guanxian had already turned his head and retracted his gaze. However, there was a faint smile on the corner of his lips.
The National Day holiday ended with the two families going out to eat.
When Xiang Yang returned to her room, tidied up, and lay down, she felt that the holiday hadn't been easy at all.
Back at school, the first grade-wide exam was coming up soon. For the first exam, not knowing the level of other students, Xiang Yang didn't dare to be careless and prepared thoroughly. She felt good during the exam. She waited anxiously for a day, and all the scores came out. As expected, Xiang Yang got first place in the grade. The second-place student in her class was twenty points behind her.
The head teacher was very happy and praised her for a long time in class.
Hou Xingrou saw that she rarely had a smile in her eyes and joked, “I told you not to worry. Look, you're the top of the grade.”
“Thank you. You did well too.”
Hou Xingrou laughed, “Yeah, but it's also thanks to you explaining math problems to me after class. I got 64th in the whole grade this time, much better than I expected!”
Xiang Yang smiled, “Keep it up! Get a better score next time!”
Hou Xingrou said, “I'll definitely work hard! By the way, Ding Wanjun got 28th in the grade this time!”
“Oh.” Xiang Yang didn't know why she suddenly mentioned Ding Wanjun.
The success of the first exam gave Xiang Yang a lot of confidence. She became even more proactive in her studies in the following period. During the mid-term exam, she lived up to expectations and achieved first place in the grade.
And the top student in the second year was still Fu Guanxian. It was said that his science scores were close to full marks, 40 points ahead of the second-place student.
The tense and busy mid-term exam was over. At the Monday flag-raising ceremony, the principal gave a routine speech summarizing the scores of all grades. To encourage the students, he personally awarded prizes to the top ten students in each grade.
When Fu Guanxian went on stage, Xiang Yang stood in the crowd and clearly felt a commotion in the different classes. She could hear whispers, but she didn't know what they were talking about. Compared to the other students, who were either respectful, nervous, or proud and delighted, Fu Guanxian seemed more casual and relaxed.
Xiang Yang glanced at him on stage, wearing his white school uniform, and then looked away.
Hou Xingrou, who was behind her, secretly nudged her and whispered, “Xiang Yang, you're also the top student in the grade! Don't be nervous when you go on stage later. Look at Fu Guanxian, haha, so handsome!”
Xiang Yang didn't turn around to look at her. She just looked up at Fu Guanxian on stage, wearing his white school uniform, and pursed her lips in dissatisfaction.
Xiang Yang looked at him, held back, but didn't have the courage to tell him that she didn't want to do his homework. Fu Guanxian patiently waited for her for a few dozen seconds.
