The Little Childhood Sweetheart's Counterattack - Chapter 7

Chapter 07:  The National Day of Mischief

Fu Guanxian jumped effortlessly and gracefully sank a three-pointer. Cheers echoed around him.

His class was already ahead by more than thirty points.

Lian Rui excitedly high-fived him, proudly saying, “I told you, we need you for the class game!”

Fu Guanxian glanced at him, “Don't get cocky. Don't pull me into this kind of deal again!”

Lian Rui laughed, “Hey, I'm running around contacting other classes, isn't it just to give you the opportunity to shine?”

“Oh, well, thanks for that!”

“Hey, don't say anything. Just look at the people watching. Every single one of them is staring at you with bright eyes!”

Fu Guanxian snorted and asked, “Lian Rui, did you learn elementary school language from your PE teacher?”

“Ah?”

After finishing his words, Fu Guanxian put his half-finished water back in its place. He warmed up, ready to go back on the court. But he casually looked to his right and saw Ding Wanjun with a large group of girls, loudly calling his name.

Yesterday, that girl had approached him, saying she was so-and-so from Class 1(2). Fu Guanxian only remembered that her name had the character "Jun" in it. He could clearly remember the class because someone else was there.

Fu Guanxian scanned the surroundings and found that person was missing.

Humph, he didn't believe that she hadn't heard his conversation with Lian Rui last night when she was in his room. The girls in her class all knew to come watch the basketball game! She didn't come?

The more Fu Guanxian thought about it, the angrier he got. So, he played even more passionately in the second half, ruthlessly crushing the other team. In the end, the score difference between the two classes was quite embarrassing.

Xiang Yang, who had always avoided any competition where Fu Guanxian was present, couldn't help but turn towards the lively playground when she heard the cheers. Hou Xingrou said, “The competition seems intense! Xiang Yang, we're already here, why don't we squeeze in and watch?” Xiang Yang immediately replied, “Someone is waiting for me, I have to go. Xingrou, see you later.” Without waiting for Hou Xingrou to persuade her, she hurried towards the school gate.

That night, Fu Guanxian didn't ask her to go to his house. Xiang Yang was overjoyed, and she played the piano for two hours that evening. Afterwards, she slept soundly until dawn. Fortunately, she rarely encountered Fu Guanxian at school after that. During breaks, she would only leave the classroom to go to the bathroom or the office.

At the end of September, the school held a recitation competition themed "Patriotism" to celebrate National Day. Xiang Yang's voice was clear, her pronunciation was full, and she was able to convey various emotions when reading articles. The head teacher chose her to represent the class. Each class from all three grades had one student participating. The competition was held on September 30th at 2:30 pm.

Xiang Yang prepared diligently for the recitation competition, staying at school after class for several days to receive personal guidance from the head teacher. When she got home, she would lock herself in her room and practice countless times. So, when the day arrived, she was still a little nervous. While waiting anxiously backstage, Xiang Yang repeated the content of her recitation silently.

“You're still cramming at the last minute. It's a miracle if you win any prize!”

There were five or six other contestants waiting backstage, along with two or three teachers. Xiang Yang heard Fu Guanxian's discouraging words and immediately looked up. She saw him standing next to her, looking at her with disdain. Seeing his deep gaze, Xiang Yang lowered her head and said nothing. She noticed the number 5 on his waist, indicating that he had already finished his recitation. Actually, she had seen the list of contestants a few days ago and knew he was on it. When she arrived earlier, she had deliberately avoided him, waiting for him to go on stage before she dared to go backstage. She was number ten, so she still had some time before her turn.

Seeing her silence, Fu Guanxian frowned and asked, “Are you mute?”

“Oh.” Xiang Yang had no choice but to give a perfunctory reply. This single word made Fu Guanxian chuckle. He crossed his arms and looked at her, dressed in a white dress, coldly saying, “Xiang Yang, I've noticed you're getting bolder.”

Xiang Yang lowered her head and didn't respond. She couldn't figure out what she had done to upset him again. Fortunately, this difficult god didn't stay long. After saying that, he left the backstage. Xiang Yang tried to calm herself down, hoping to perform exceptionally well on stage. Although she was very nervous, miraculously, after her legs trembled for a few dozen seconds, she gradually calmed down and began to fully immerse herself in the performance. When she finished, she received warm applause.

Xiang Yang bowed gracefully and thanked the audience. As she got up, she glanced at the contestant area below. Fu Guanxian wasn't there. She was relieved. After getting off the stage, she returned to the contestant area. Fu Guanxian didn't appear the whole time.

Finally, when the awards were announced, Xiang Yang received second place. The head teacher rarely praised her, “Well, you did well today. You performed much better than during practice.”

Fu Guanxian, who had won first place, didn't show up. The host called his name three times, but he was nowhere to be seen. In the end, because their head teacher had something to do and couldn't attend, the head teacher of the grade helped Fu Guanxian collect his certificate.

After the recitation competition, Xiang Yang, who had been on edge for days, finally breathed a sigh of relief. However, she had relaxed too soon. Because that evening, Fu Guanxian came to the Xiang family's house, carrying his backpack. Seeing Xiang Yang's parents, he behaved politely, suppressing his usual mischievousness. He said, “Uncle and Auntie, can I stay at your house for National Day? My parents are away, they're not at home.”

Xiang Yi readily agreed, “Sure! What's the problem?”

Fu Guanxian happily thanked them and turned to look at Xiang Yang with a smug smile. Xiang Yang's face turned pale, and she looked at him in fear.

After dinner, Xiang Yang was tidying up her desk in her room when Fu Guanxian knocked on the door and came in. He threw a notebook to Xiang Yang and said, “Take a look!”

“Look at what?” Xiang Yang was puzzled. She picked it up and opened it, and she saw the first diary entry. The familiar handwriting was hers. Xiang Yang remembered that she had written a diary for him that night... She didn't dare to look at Fu Guanxian's expression. She flipped to the end of the second page and found that his teacher had written a few hundred words of comments after reading the diary. The gist was that honesty was very important, and he was able to realize his mistakes and correct them seriously, which was very commendable.

“Pfft...” Xiang Yang couldn't help but laugh.

Fu Guanxian snorted, “Xiang Xiaoyang, you can still laugh?”

Hearing his roar, Xiang Yang realized she had been too carefree. She quickly stopped laughing, but her slightly trembling shoulders betrayed her. Xiang Yang didn't expect his Chinese teacher, the young female teacher from that day, to be so cute and serious. The last time Fu Guanxian asked her to write a fake diary entry, she had no idea what interesting things had happened to him that day. So, she exaggerated the story about that male classmate saying that Fu Guanxian had suddenly gone back on his word and didn't participate in the class competition. Of course, Xiang Yang also established a good image for him, writing about his deep reflection and regret. The heartfelt words were truly profound.

Unknown to Xiang Yang, Fu Guanxian's teacher praised him greatly in class for being able to write such a sincere diary entry. She even picked out a few sentences from it and read them aloud in class, taking the opportunity to expand on the timeless topic of “honesty”. Finally, she didn't forget to praise Fu Guanxian again, hoping he would continue to write such vivid and genuine diaries.

When he received the diary, Fu Guanxian gritted his teeth and said in a low voice, “Xiang Yang, you're amazing!”

After class, Lian Rui and a bunch of other boys saw Fu Guanxian's black face and deliberately teased him several times.

“Get lost!” Fu Guanxian was furious. Old and new scores, he would settle them all. So, Fu Guanxian planned to stay at the Xiang family's house for the National Day Golden Week.

Seeing Xiang Yang still secretly trying to hold back her laughter, Fu Guanxian narrowed his eyes and asked in a low voice, “Are you done laughing?”

Xiang Yang tried to hold back her laughter and force a smile off her face. Fu Guanxian saw that the corners of her mouth were still turned upwards. Suddenly, he said, “If you dare laugh again, I'll make you cry out loud!”

Xiang Yang thought for a moment and defended herself, “You asked me to write the diary.” He didn't say she couldn't write it like that. Besides, after she finished writing it, wouldn't he take a look?

Fu Guanxian actually hadn't looked.

“Oh, you're right? So, it's my fault?” Fu Guanxian's face changed slightly.

Xiang Yang didn't dare to argue with him anymore. It was wrong to ask someone else to do your homework.

Fu Guanxian crossed his arms and looked down at her, “To make you atone for your sins and stop feeling guilty in the middle of the night, you have to do all my National Day homework!”

“What!”

“Do I need to repeat myself?”

Xiang Yang looked at his slightly raised eyebrows, as if he would punch her if she dared to say “no”. She lowered her head and weakly replied, “I have a lot of National Day homework too.”

“What does that have to do with me? Seven days isn't enough for you to finish?”

Xiang Yang: "..."
